This song is about the downside of drugs.
Shinn injected the song with a howling lead line - courtesy of his Rickenbacker 360, Fender Bassman, VoxAC30, and series of effects that included an MXR Phase 90a Dunlop Crybaby, an Electro-Harmonix Memory Man, and an Ernie Ball volume pedal.
Brad:
I
think the song is about…standing by and watching somebody wreck their life
and you want to help them so badly, you
know
what I mean?
Brad: "The song was poignantly inspired by a friend who was going down the same path as Shannon, but it's not directly about Shannon. The message is quite haunting. Living your life around hard drugs is a dead end ... sometimes literally,"
Brad:
"'Wither'
is a song about watching someone you love slowly hit their personal bottom
and not being able to help
in
his or her path. Some people simply won't let you in to help and will have
to deal with their demons alone before they can make any sort of steps
toward healing. I think everyone has, on some level, dealt with this. I
wish this song was an answer."
Chris Shinn: "I'm proud of my guitar part on that one. The trick is not being afraid to take chances. You have to be willing to do whatever it takes to make the song something special."
Lyrics:
Fill
the hole with a single perforation.
Makes
the mountains look big enough from where I'm sitting
Poking
through the skin your wearing
The
spike has a way of dimming you life
And
so I'll sit and watch you wither on by
And
so I'll sit and watch you wither on by...
A miracle
is what I'm asking,
To
take away the spike and spoon I see you sweatin
And
open up to the world you missing
if
just for a day
And
so I'll sit and watch you wither on by
And
so I'll sit and watch you wither on by
You
are blowing away
Pulled
from the roots
Don't
crumble from weight
Like
a wave that broke to far from shore
And
so I'll sit and watch you wither on by
And
so I'll sit and watch you wither on by
