"Cessna" is a type of airplane.

Chris Shinn: "Cessna was probably one of the most inspired piece of music I've ever written.  That was one of the first songs, I had only been in Seattle about two days, we were just getting acquainted.  I went out with Christopher to walk his dog.  We came back in, picked up the acoustic and Bam! that "ooh haaa" came out with this groove.  I sat there and banged it out and about ten minutes later, literally, I had every chord change down but I didn't have any lyrics.  I was like "man this is kinda cool," so Brad came in and said "Ok, we're gonna do that.  That's fucking great.  We'll use this" so we put together some of his bass lines and his stuff and Brad and I beat out the lyrics.  I actually had this idea to call it "Cessna" and it be about my fear flying because I'm terrified of it and thats about it's about.  Brad had the great analogy in using the metaphor of Icarus.  Ya know the wings of wax?  The song's pretty tragic.  The one line "Choice, the chair I'm strapped to falling my way into God, I'm going down" basically, it's about the plane going down, about all these horrible images that I put through my head sitting on a plane waiting on my Jack Daniels to come."

Brad: This is one of the first two songs that the group wrote and recorded together.  It was written and recorded n 24 hours.    A few of the songs came off of a jam, like “Cessna” was a jam.

Chris Shinn: Brad and I wrote the lyrics together. A Cessna is about the worst plane that you can fly in. . .

Brad: Yeah, you always hear about a Cessna going down somewhere and we are not going to be the posterchildren for that aircraft company! (laughs)

Christopher: "On Cessna, I created this swirling bed of atmosphere.  Sometimes the effect is so loud  you can't even tell I'm playing notes."

Lyrics:
Flight, oh captain please remember my name for the clouds
Safe, with wings of wax, I trust in the sun over me..

Fast, I'm so elated, days I have saved on these wings,
Choice, the chair I'm strapped to, falling my way into God

God knows that I cannot fly
Streaming through conscience and I God knows that I cannot fly

Fuel, and simple thoughts, I've tried to forget in the sky
Choice, the chair I'm strapped to falling my way into God.

I'm going down
I'm going down
I'm going down
