The following is a transcription of an online chat that occurred with Unified Theory, September 28th, 2000.
amuznet_live: Christopher and Brad are here to chat with you! And we're ready to start!!
Unified Theory:
Christopher: Hey everybody this is Christopher
Thorn speaking, welcome!
Brad: This is Brad, wussup! Wussup!
englandborn1: What is the one thing you are most proud of as a band or individuals?
Unified Theory:
Brad: I'm most proud that when I was 19
I had the balls to drop out of college and move to CA. Following my own
bliss!
Christopher: I think that sums it up for
me too! Having the balls to follow your dreams, not to sound like a Hallmark
card or anything, but yeah, that's what I'm most proud of. I'm also proud
to have survived the music business for almost 10 years.
Brad: Oohhh that's a good one.... me too.
Chris Shen has just joined us!
unified_theory_2000: Peter from Milwaukee asking what song are they leaning towards being their next single?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: What do YOU think the next
single should be?
Chris: I like them all! I want them all
in heavy rotation.
valleygirl113: Any juicy stories to share about the Live/CC tour? What's next?!
Unified Theory:
Chris: We had to sign waivers after we
left so we can't tell anything:)
Brad: You signed a huge waiver didn't
you?
Chris: I signed a huge ass cheek in Vegas
which was pretty funny
Christopher: The guys from Live and they
had this rap album blaring and this guy yelled out "there's so much rock
going on in this band!!! I can't take it!" It was just a funny moment.
dudelovethe1: How do you guys feel about Napster?
Unified Theory:
Chris: I think it's great! there ya go...
badabing badaboom... I downloaded Counting Crows, downloaded it while on
the road learned it, played it with them live the next day. Thanks Napster.
Christopher: It's like what are you going
to do? Piss off your fans for liking your music?
Chris: I hope people still go buy the
record for the real deel the packaging and stuff... and if they don't we
can't make another record.
DuraMolly: Hey guys, Steve from Detroit, just wondering what your favourite opening band has been so far?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: Our manager manages a band
called Goudy, they are really sweet guys, they're from Austin, we had so
much fun with those guys, we will no doubt hook up with that band again.
dudelovethe1: What is the song "Not Dead" about? And please dont say "Its about whatever you think its about"!
Unified Theory:
Chris: I wrote that song when I was about
18 per going to 19 when I first moved out to L.A. Unified Theory decided
to pull out of my past and kind of unified it. The song itself is about
a bunch of things, things change meaning the older I get I guess the good
songs tend to that. Not dead is about a very scary experience for me that
was drug induced, it was an
immature thing, I was 18 or so, and made a big
mistake. It's one of those things where you reach a point in life where
you realize that you're not dead, that you are alive and with that confusion.
In a sense of complete terror and beauty I realized I wasn't dead you know?
englandborn1: What was it like opening for LIVE? (my all time fav. band plus you guys of course)
Unified Theory:
Christopher: It was great man, they are
great friends of ours, we had a great great time with them
Chris: The guys of the band we're just
really cool and just embraced us as their opening act. I've never been
treated like that on a headlining tour as the opening band
Christopher: We got to jam with them during
a live set, it was great. A lot of love there.
trindi2000: Chris, you're my guitar hero man, it's weird how your style has dramaticaly changed this album...It's completely awesome! But I miss the cool riffs, what's up with the huge change?
Unified Theory:
Chris: I think it's important for any
musician or artist to push themselves foward, if that means you alienate
some people on the way I think you have to sort of have to live with that.
I have to explore different ways of playing. The chemistry between Chris
and Brad and myself is different then the chemistry I had with other bands.
mikerhino6: What's goin on, UT...Shinn and the rest...Mike Sarasti here.
Unified Theory:
Chris: Dave Krusen was two things, one
was in our neighborhood in Seattle. I knew him because I produced this
band called Diamond Star Halo and so I gave him a call when we needed a
drummer. Yeah! What's up Mike!!!!
Brad: Mikey!!!!
chalk_garden: Who has girlfriends? And if you don't would you ever date a fan?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: We're all totally single,
and of course we'll date fans. :)
Chris: Brad just likes to look in the
mirror a lot. :) We keep the band stocked with a bunch of barely legals.
:)
chalk_garden: What do you look for in a girl? Other than a rack?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: I mean I'm not a big fan
of the rack to tell you the truth.
Chris: I dunno, it's awesome to see boobs
from stage, it's not like when you're 17 and you're just like ooooh boobies,
but from stage, you're just like ROCK AND ROLL YEAH!!!!
Chris: The boob and butt thing.. I dunno...
we're not your average rock band, we don't fall into the cliche to much.
We all have girlfriends that we love very much.
Christopher: Boobies are cool... our girlfriends
have nice boobies.
littlebuddynikki: What are you going to do with your recording of the EMP show?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: We haven't heard it yet,
we need to approve it and listen to it first.
trindi2000: Where do you guys see yourselves in a year?
Unified Theory:
Brad: Touring and supporting this record.
It's going to be over in about a year, so hopefully making a new record.
Christopher: In a year I would love to be getting into this next record,
I'm really excited for the next step of this band. Because we weren't really
a live band until we made this record, so now we have the chance to build
ourselves as a live band.
Chris: I would like to be in the Bahamas
recording the new record, a hotel, a little cabana. :)
nevespanda: Is there one band that doesn't exist anymore that they would have liked to get the opportunity to tour with?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: The Beatles
Chris: Yeah
englandborn1: Chris Schinn: What do you wear under the skirt?
Unified Theory:
Chris: This whole tour I had this giant
roadcase made for my clothes, and I wore the same thing every night, no
shoes, shirt, undies, just this skirt, went through a lot of razors.
jason_goode78: Brad, Jason from MS, what are your feelings about a Behind the Music made on Blind Melon?
Unified Theory:
Brad: Well it hasn't been made yet, but
I feel good about it, I think we'll be able to shed some positive light
on a situation. btw... hey Jason!!!
phreshnd: Will you be swinging through New Orleans anytime soon? I missed you in Lafayette, but love the CD!
Unified Theory:
Christopher: October something is the
date... the best way to find out where we're touring is hit the website,
and there will always be up there.
valleygirl113: If you could kick the ass of one Backstreet Boy, who would it be and why?
Unified Theory:
Chris: The guy that looks me... oh no
wait.. that's *NSYNC...
sneakypantalones: Have you noticed a difference in show turnouts and overall attitude from coast to coast?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: Absolutely. Mainly since
the record came out because the music is about it.
Chris: Seatlle has been really rolling
out the love. The east coast has definitely shown their love too. What's
great about the east coast is that people can see a few shows because the
drives aren't as bad.
Chrisopher: We played at the Gorge with
Live and the Counting Crows, cuz the place is stunning.
jason_goode78: Brad, do you wish to play a show near your hometown since you never get to play near there?
Unified Theory:
Brad: Hopefully, I'm not sure when that
will go down, but hopefully soon. We're going to play the Prarie Arts Festival
next year!
mikerhino6: I'll keep putting in this question till I get the answer ...Chris, since you're the BT fan and all, how far do you think you'll push the limits in the future with electronic music? Or will you?
Unified Theory:
Chris: Brad's the BT fan, I'm more into
Bjork and stuff.Brad: I've written a few programming things, I'm not very
good at it, but I know enough to appreciate it, I don't think I'll ever
make a record like that though.
Christopher: But you know it could sneak
into our next record as influences and stuff, because our band is so diverse.
lonely_man_in_texas71: What's the easiest way for a small time band to get noticed and get started and record deals?
Unified Theory:
Brad: Every way is a hard way, there is
no easy. The small town bands, if you get to the point where you are the
biggest band in the town, you need to get out and go on the road. I've
seen huge bands in towns that are so afraid to leave, there's always an
excuse, but the people who did leave are the ones that make it.
cher9094: Hi Brad! Cher from Atlanta here....when is your solo record going to be released?
Unified Theory:
Chris: Hey Cher!! We love Cher!
Brad: Hey!! What was the name of that
one hotel bar Cher? We had a great time at that bar with you in ATL. I
don't know when that's coming out, it's on the back burner.
chalk_garden: What would you be doing if you weren't in the band?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: We would hang out with a
band.
Chris: It's like what would a bird do
if it lost it's wings? It would walk around looking for its wings. Is that
a hallmark card?
diablogirl21: How was the CD release party @ the Viper Room? (in LA)
Unified Theory:
Christopher: It was amazing. We actually
had fans in the place instead of just corporate pee pee sniffers, it was
sold out down the block too which is nice.
Brad: It was to much love for the place
to hold! I love that.
unified_theory_2000: Have you been writing songs on the road for the next record?
Unified Theory:
Chris: I'd like to... at least we've talked
about it, is release an EP in the next year, all the songs that didn't
make this record. I just think that the band has grown so much that our
next record should be at where the band is at that time.
chalk_garden: What's in your CD player?
Unified Theory:
Christopher: I woke up today and put on
Nina Simone actually.
Brad: Vrigin Suicide soundtrack.
Chris: I'm still listening to Nick Drake.
englandborn1: If you could change one thing in your life what would it be?
Unified Theory:
Chris: Get Brad that Listerine for x-mas!
That's a hard question, I don't regret anything, I wouldn't change a thing.
Christopher: You try to live in the moment
and not have regrets like that.
alicianyc2000: What do you do to keep things fresh and exciting while you're on the road?
Unified Theory:
Chris: Things are fresh and exciting on
the road period.. You're meeting new people eveyr day, and you're in new
cities every day.
Christopher: You know what... go see "Almost
Famous" and you'll see what we do everyday, with the exception with like
the acid and stuff.
Brad: We don't just sit in the hotel,
we walk around and check it out, it's fun.
sneakypantalones: Who directed the California Video?
Unified Theory:
Brad: Bobby G directed it and when you
make videos it always feels weird with the tense playback and stuff. It
was fun, they closed off Hollywood Blvd. It was fun, it was a 12 hour shoot.
DuraMolly: Chris, how do you feel being compared to shannon just because you play with his old band members? Is it getting old?
Unified Theory:
Chris: I think the comparison is very
flattering, I'm sure the comparison comes from our vocal stylings not our
personalites, I never knew the guy, but I think it's extremely flattering.
There certainly will never be another Shannon Hoon. I have tremendous faith
in this band though. But it's very flattering...
veryberryjulie: On your CD "Thank You's", you mention the guys in Candlebox, how have they influenced your music?
Unified Theory:
Brad: No, but all of them are friends
of the band. We used their rehearsal space for a long time.
Chris: Kevin's been a really good friend.
unified_theory_2000: Peter from Milwaukee asking when the store is going to open on the web site?
Unified Theory:
Brad: that's a good question...
Christopher: Hopefully before we go back
on the road, there will be a big mail once it is up.
englandborn1: Do you have any wierd talents?
Unified Theory:
Brad: I used to keep bees in Seattle,
I had them in my backyard, it was fun. I went through a sewing phase, I'd
like to get back into that, I was making shirts and stuff
Christopher: Other talents? No I'm still
trying to work on being a guitar player:)
englandborn1: What do you enjoy the most about life?
Unified Theory:
Chris: I think great friends
Brad: Lots of laughter around me, I think
I'm very blessed to have that. Music is so all encompassing. music.
Chris: I've been blessed with an amazing
family, a great mother and father that I keep in touch with on a daily
basis. Oh! We want to thank our street team! We love you guys so much,
you have made the difference for us this last tour. The best fans there
were the ones that the street team brought in. It's so awesome.
Christopher: Thanks to everyone for hitting
the website and sending us beautiful messages. I unfortunately don't have
the Internet while on tour, but over the last couple of days I've been
reading every single message anyone has ever sent us.
Brad: Thanks everyone for coming, we'll be touring
in October and then hitting the east coast. Thanks for coming!! Bye!
amuznet_live: Thanks eveyrone for coming!
amuznet_live: Bye!!!
